{"id":17271,"date":"2026-07-09T11:28:30","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T11:28:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/?p=17271"},"modified":"2026-07-09T11:28:30","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T11:28:30","slug":"rix-hackathon26-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/uz\/rix-hackathon26-3\/","title":{"rendered":"RIX Hackathon26"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"intro-para\">Our third annual inclusive hackathon took place on 19 June at the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability and was attended by a diverse group of people with lived experience, UEL Summer School students, RIX interns, academic staff and other professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This year we decided to focus more on the hackathon itself and less on the guest presentations in order to give more time for our partners with lived experience to participate.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re grateful to local MP <strong>Sir Stephen Timms<\/strong>, for getting us off to a great start with a rousing speech about disability inclusion and how we need to create a more level playing field for those who have been traditionally left out or overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>It was also inspiring to hear from Policy Connect&#8217;s Director of Policy, <strong>Robert McLaren<\/strong>. Robert&#8217;s work provides a conduit to policy makers, ensuring people&#8217;s ideas and aspirations are heard at the highest level.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 56.25% 0 0 0; position: relative;\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" title=\"RIX Hackathon26\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1207398053?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The theme for Hackathon26 was <em><strong>How can we use AI to help us find solutions to the challenges we face in life?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>We had prepared a list of these challenges over a number of earlier workshops with our co-researchers with lived experience and these were shared with participants using a <a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/\">Padlet<\/a>. As in previous RIX hackathons, there was no shortage of creative solutions generated by the different small table groups.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17274\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/H26-newsletter-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17274\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/H26-newsletter-2.jpg\" alt=\"woman holding display board\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/H26-newsletter-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/H26-newsletter-2-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/H26-newsletter-2-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants used art and craft materials to help visualise their solutions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The winning solution<\/h3>\n<p><strong>OnYourWay<\/strong><br \/>\nTeam OnYourWay presented not one, but two winning solutions, both designed to help people get out of the house and on their way to work, meet friends or make an important appointment.<br \/>\nTheir first invention was a shower that gradually changes from hot to cool after a set period of time. Rather than relying on alarms or sand timers, the changing water temperature provides a gentle, sensory prompt that says, <em><strong>Time&#8217;s up<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and encourages users to move on to the next step of their routine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17290\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/h263.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/h263.jpg\" alt=\"man and woman showing model shower to audience\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/h263.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/h263-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.rixinclusiveresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/h263-16x12.jpg 16w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shower time<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once showered and ready, the team also designed an app that plans routes which avoid sensory overstimulation, helping users steer clear of busy roads, noisy building works and other challenging environments. The app also breaks journeys down into manageable, multisensory steps, providing reassurance and confidence along the way.<\/p>\n<p>OnYourWay explored the challenge of getting somewhere on time, confidently and without anxiety. As users move through the scanner, they receive personalised tips and suggestions to improve their wellbeing. We think every home should have one!<\/p>\n<p><strong>TfLGo+<\/strong><br \/>\nThis group focused on the existing TfL app and proposed a series of thoughtful, incremental improvements that would significantly improve accessibility for disabled users. Their project demonstrated how small design changes can make a huge difference to many people.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Now in its third year, the Inclusive Hackathon continues to deliver something very special: different people working together to solve real-world challenges. Every year it grows, bringing together new people with new perspectives from across the UK and around the world, making it one of the highlights of my year. The event celebrates inclusion, creativity and engineering, but at its heart is a belief in the power of lived experience. When we place lived experience at the centre and design at the edges, we create solutions that improve everyday life for everyone.
