Ros and Baljit have been travelling independently to RIX for the past few years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kanchan, Ajay, Helen, Ros, Baljit and Gosia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Upon arrival at Docklands Campus, a member of the team has always gone to meet them as they leave the transport bus and direct them to the RIX office. Each travel journey to the RIX office includes several phone calls, to either Kanchan or Gosia, before they get on the bus, whilst they are on the bus, and when they arrive at campus.<\/p>\n

Today something wonderful happened.<\/p>\n

Kanchan and I were waiting for the co-researchers to arrive for a workshop. Kanchan started to get a little nervous. She was saying to me that she hadn\u2019t received one phone call or any communication from Ros, and that this is very unusual.<\/p>\n

Just then, right around 10.30am, Ros and Baljit showed up at the door with the biggest smiles on their faces! They had managed to travel and find their way to the RIX office on their own. No anxious phone calls to Kanchan or Gosia checking that a staff member will meet them.<\/p>\n

This was a big step in their independence and something to be incredibly proud of. We celebrated the occasion with a nice photo of Ros and Baljit with bright smiles and big thumbs up.<\/p>\n

After some slight probing, we found that they had made one phone call to Gosia to let her know they were doing good and didn\u2019t need any help. This was a brilliant step forward in their confidence in traveling and their independence in their daily lives.<\/p>\n

Baljit said that one of the ways she wants to become more independent is to have more experiences and opportunities to rely on herself and her own strengths more often. She said that she feels like she is a different person when she comes to RIX because she can think more for herself without the aid of someone else.<\/p>\n

But, more importantly, she feels like she can say what she feels or thinks without fear of being judged or saying the wrong answer because she knows that there are no wrong answers, and all of her ideas and opinions will be heard and valued here at RIX.<\/p>\n
