Over the past six weeks, I have had the wonderful opportunity to intern at Rix Inclusive Research as a Digital Communications and Engagement Intern while studying abroad in London through CEA CAPA.
As a psychology and business/marketing student at the University of Minnesota, I have always been interested in work that combines creativity and social impact. My position at RIX has allowed me to explore this interest and has taught me so much in such a short amount of time.
From day one, the RIX team was incredibly welcoming and open to the ideas and contributions of interns. I appreciated how much trust they placed in us and how collaborative the environment was. Early on, I took part in team meetings where I learned more about current projects and future goals, such as the further development of the RIX Wiki and the expansion of Multimedia Advocacy training. These conversations helped me see how dedicated the team is to making research and communication tools inclusive and accessible for all.
A big part of my role involved supporting RIX’s social media presence. I created LinkedIn content and launched an Instagram account to help expand community engagement. I really enjoyed contributing to the organisation’s digital voice and thinking about how to represent its mission in a meaningful and accurate way. I also helped promote Hackathon25, a special event focused on inclusive research and co-creation. Seeing people with lived experience lead conversations and contribute ideas around inclusion, accessibility, and healthy living was incredibly powerful. Being even a small part of that work is something I will always remember.
What stood out to me most about RIX is how clearly its sense of purpose shines through in everything the team does. Their mission – to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities through inclusive research and accessible digital tools – is reflected not only in their ongoing projects, but in their behind-the-scenes collaboration and thoughtful care they bring to their work each and every day. The RIX approach is creative, people-first, and built on the belief that everyone deserves the chance to express themselves in their own voice. “Nothing about us without us” is a phrase I’ve learned that I will continue to carry forward.
Looking back, I feel lucky to have spent my time in London with such a thoughtful and passionate team. RIX may be a small organisation, but its impact is huge. Whether I was contributing ideas in meetings, creating social media posts, or learning through hands-on experiences, I came away with a much deeper understanding of what inclusive, person centred work looks like in practice. This internship has shaped how I see communication and advocacy, and I know I will carry these lessons with me through the rest of my academic and professional career.
